O
ver the years, I have been inspired to create line art illustrations, some abstract motifs, and others of animals (zoomorphic),
with some similar form and decorative qualities as the calligraphic lettering styles that I've been working on. Art direction, the needs of the client, and the function of the art have modulated the illustration style according to each separate job. Because my background and base is in lettering design, some of the illustrations are created to combine with lettering, and vice versa. In special situations, I've kept an eye out for ideal blends, or "lock ups", where letter forms flow within the other elements. Then, more recently, jobs such as the VSP and Calgary represented on this page have called for a "lettering as illustration" approach, in which the words take on a figurative context, and resemble the subject of the illustration, somewhat as in a logo design. This page contains some select pieces created for special clients, and more examples of similar pieces can be found on the Logo Design, as well as the Wedding Invitation and Greeting Card pages.
